Select the right battery – Ensure reliable operation of your control unit
The control units made by BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE, which monitor reliable operation of your decentralized sewage treatment plant, are complex electronic devices. In general, control units in continuous and SBR plants are exposed to demanding conditions. Among others the following operational parameters are crucial:
- Maximum temperature of WWTP ambience 50-55°C
- Batteries have to be of the right dimensions, capacity and type.
- Another criterion for their selection is re-charging through permanently low current.
BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE as a manufacturer of control units regularly checks and tests suitable battery types available on the market. Based on our experience we generally recommend:
- Type of the battery: Ni-MH
- Size: AA, HR6
- Capacity: ≥ 1800 mAh
- Execution: Suitable for permanent recharging with low current
Upon request with every control unit purchased we can supply 1 or more pieces of batteries.
You can buy the rechardable batteries in specialized shops, order them from your KKA supplier or from us.

How to choose a control unit for your WWTP
When you go shopping for clothes or shoes, there are some basic information you will need to get the right jacket or a fitting pair of shoes. In order to choose the right control unit for your domestic sewage treatment plant, you will need to answer some basic questions, too.
Try our 10 GUIDELINES to help you:
1. What WWTP type do you have? SBR, MBBR, Fixed-Bed or any other?
BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE can offer you customized control units for almost all types. Read more HERE.
2. How many valves do you need for your WWTP?
At BONNEL we offer four-valve stepper motor manifolds or control units with integrated stepper motor valve units for SBR (BonBloc® series). To all our control you can also connect solenoid valves and our latest smart control unit Sequetrol® IoT can control up to seven valves.
3. How many 230V outputs (=relays) do you need?
You can use them to operate the blower, valves, submersible pumps, dosing pumps, UV-lamps, alarm lamps, …
4. How will you measure the water level?
By a float switch or a pressure sensor (SBR plants only)? This specification is crucial for your future control unit.
5. Which alarms can be a useful help for your staff or customers?
We can monitor: Mains failure. Fuse error. Overfill. Pressure. Current. Monitoring of the valve function. Do you wish to have a multiple login for more members of your staff? Ask us at BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE.
6. Will you need an event protocol?
Legislation and regulations in some countries may require one.
7. Do your staff members or customers speak no English?
Would you like to have another language for the menu? Make the usage easier for your staff and customers in their mother tongue if available. There is also another option. BONNEL can provide the texts and you may translate them.
8. Is the decentralized sewage treatment plant to be aerated 24/7 or do you wish to operate it more ecofriendly – load dependant?
If so, ask for additional programmes, such eco- or holiday modes.
9. Do you have skilled staff who are able to design your own customized software?
Then, you can choose out of three options to design or modify your proces: Excel for quick and easy adoptions on our entry-level control units, MenuMaker for sophisticated programs and menu structures or DataBuilder for continuous plants.
10. Are you going to use the best of high-tech and IoT technologies in your plant?
Look into the latest GSM options with Aquavisor app and telemetry solutions. Ask us about the integration of wifi or webserver.
And there is much more we offer at BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE, such as tailor-made solutions for different countries and customers, professional technical consultancy five days a week.
How to take good care for your control unit
Do you have a family house, a weekend cottage or a challet? Do you have to deal with a location without a central sewage system?
Have you decided to benefit from modern decentralized sewage treatment plants which can enable you to re-use the treated water efficiently in your house for flushing the toilet or watering your garden?
Is a control unit part of your WWTP? Does it monitor its operation 24/7 and does it work in the eco and holiday modes? Does it prevent sludge from settling and smelling?
We asked BONNEL technicians how to keep your control unit – the brain of your WWTP – in the best shape for the longest time possible.
1. Install the device into suitable location.
Your control unit should be
- Outside your WWTP (or)
- In the well-aired space inside the WWTP
- Sufficiently high above the terrain to prevent a snowfall, flooding or dust from coming in
- In dry space – humidity can cause corrosion of electrical parts
- In a closed and well-aired object/box/pillar/wooden box. The blower will need fresh air not the air from WWTP.
- Inside, not in the direct sun. The control unit cannot be exposed to temperatures permanently exceeding 45-50 degrees Celsius. In the southern part of the control cabinet these values can be reached easily.
- Good access for the service staff and the owner
- No access for unauthorized persons and children
2. Check the control unit regularly – visually and by listening to it
Check once a week if your control unit sends any alarm.
Check if the WWTP smells like „rotten eggs“. This odour near the control unit may signal faulty functioning of your WWTP. These gases may cause corrosion of your control unit (electrical components) and the concrete tanks, too.
3. Take preventive care and maintain your WWTP regularly
Follow instructions and recommendations given by the producers regarding preventive maintenance.
Prevention and good care are two important steps to a reliable operation of your control unit and your WWTP.

4 reasons why you should use telemetry systems for your sewage treatment plant
The digital age and the concept of "smart cities" and "smart homes" have brought changes to the rigid field of wastewater treatment. Authorities and individual owners of sewage treatment plants no longer wish to wait for hours and days. They want to be informed continuously about their operation and be ready to tackle technical issues just in time. There are 4 good reasons why BONNEL telemetry systems are an invaluable tool for the WWTP monitoring now and in the future.
Monitor your sewage treatment plant 24/7
Embrace the IoT era and monitor your WWTP from your office, home or elsewhere thanks to BONNEL telemetry systems online. You can look up any details about your plant and its operation.
You can even pre-set the monitoring intervals when your WWTP will be called and asked for a status report. No need to wake up in the middle of the night, our telemetry system will automatically contact the plant and store the data for you. Sleep well while your service takes care. BONNEL telemetry systems can always guarantee a good operation.
Optimize your maintenance costs
Telemetry systems can make you some serious money. How, you may ask? BONNEL telemetry will help you schedule your service staff visits on sites and maximize their efficiency. Thanks to the SMS messages you will be informed of failure descriptions in advance. So, you can optimize business trips and save transportation and labor costs.
Monitor the whole network
Another good news is that you can include all your plants in the telemetry network at once. So, less paper work if you are a municipality with a high number of WWTPs. It will also foster trust among your fellow citizens - users if your service works flawlessly and if you keep them engaged in the community and ecology. If applicable you can even facilitate an operation model (BOOT, BOT...).
Report the data according to valid legislation
In many countries round the globe, environmentally friendly sewage treatment comes into focus. As a result, numerous legislations become stricter and they require accurate reporting from your WWTP. Go with the telemetry flow and provide precise reports on your WWTP operation to the local and national authorities.
If you wish to learn more about telemetry benefits, please contact our Sales team. We will be happy to schedule a presentation of BONNEL telemetry systems and share with you the best practices e.g. from Germany or Czech Republic.
