Wastewater treatment in Lithuania at the present
At present, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Baltic countries with almost 6 million inhabitants, deal with wastewater treatment as much as the pioneers in the decentralized sewage treatment plants, Germany or France.
As Aušra Mažeikienė and Rasa Vaiškūnaitė, the authors of the original research "Analysis and Assessment of Biological Treatment Processes in a Small-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant" claim: "In recent years the variety of different types of small-scale household wastewater treatment plants produced in Lithuania and abroad has increased considerably within the country.
With stricter requirements for wastewater treatment, small-scale individual wastewater treatment plants can provide a financially attractive alternative to a sever connection in locations far from the existing sewer network. Systems operating under the basis of active sludge are considered advanced, and their producers declare high levels of wastewater treatment not only according to BOD, but also under biogenic materials."
In order to help WWTP manufacturers particularly in Lithuania, in February 2019, BIBUS Baltics and BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE realized a special knowledge-exchange tour highlighting the importance of WWTP monitoring and its effective operation. During the three-day tour of the Baltic countries, both partners visited four local WWTP producers of continuous plants.

On Tuesday, January 29th, professionals from Germany and from other countries met on a one-day conference on "Rainwater and wastewater treatment - technology status and outlook". How can you adjust your sewage treatment plant for winter operation?
A biological SBR plant is already adjusted for this operation when it will be switched to an eco mode or even turned off from the inflow. Thanks to a control unit, the plant can be set up for winter months with a decreased inflow of effluent. It is necessary to keep the biological fuction of the plant. It means to protect live microorganisms in the tanks even without aeration and „feeding“.
Our partner TopolWater tested and operates its SBR plants with control units in demanding climatic conditions in Sweden and the company claims: „The operation has been tested under the conditions that a fully running plant was turned off from the inflow and after three months´ operation there was still 70 per cent of microorganisms present in the WWTP. According to the partner´s information from Sweden, even though the WWTP Topas 75 had been running 4 months in the winter time without any effluent, its biological function was preserved.“ www.topolwater.cz
At low temperatures technologies cannot freeze if they are in operation. If your plant is equipped with a control unit, our partner advises you to set up manually the operation which will make the wastewater circulate permanently and the blower will not switch off automatically.

Interview with Jan Bonn about the market trends in France
At the beginning of our interview with Mr. Jan Bonn, managing partner of BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE and professional in wastewater treatment (WWTP), we should be aware of the following facts:
At present there are 65 million inhabitants in France. In some regions without any sewage system, the French use decentralized sewage treatment. What is the current status in this branch?
Which types of decentralized sewage treatment plants can be found most frequently in France? Most frequently we can find biofilter sewage treatment plants or simple MBBR plants.
Which trends have you noticed during your October trip to the international fair in Dunkerque?
At the fair we noticed a great interest in monitoring of decentralized sewage treatment plants in particular regarding applications which have not been monitored until now. These are solutions with biofilter as well as simple MBBR plants. This monitoring should be ideally integrated into the "smart home" concept, the overall digital and long-distance monitoring of your home. In addition, applications for mobile devices, which enable to organize and optimize service trips more efficiently, were in focus.
Which trends has France followed in decentralized wastewater treatment recently?
In contrast to the Czech Republic or Germany, a solution based on biofilters is spread a lot in France. The fact is that in France their effluent values (= quality of water treatment) are often better than those of simple continuous sewage treatment plants without control unit. However, this solution is financially more demanding. MBBR plant manufacturers aim to offer intelligent concepts and control units which increase reliability and performance of these WWTP so that they can compete with biofilter-based plants.
How do biofilter producers respond?
This group of manufacturers tends to integrate monitoring and electronic solutions, which simplify the detection and analysis of failures, into their sewage treatment plants.
In which aspects do France and the Czech Republic differ significantly?
The Czech Statistical Office states that in 2016 the ration of sewage system coverage in the Czech Republic is 84.7%. In the capital city of Prague and in some regions, it is even higher than 90%. This ratio sets the conditions and regions where domestic sewage treatment plants can be used.
The overall situation in the Czech Republic and in France does not differ that much. The usage of decentralized WWTPs is limited in both countries by the fact that their types are tested only in testing institutions under laboratory conditions. For the real operation, often no explicit or neutral analyses of treated water are required. As a result, the end users do not obtain any information or overview which WWTP has which performance. The key factor for purchasing a WWTP is, therefore, its price.
The Czech Republic and France respond to this fact in a different way. The Czech Republic has announced an invitation to tenders which offers a subsidy program for decentralized WWTP under the condition that the municipality can prove that its WWTP has been cleaning wastewaters reliably for over 10 years. This approach is neutral, and it makes sense. A WWTP can reliably treat water for at least 10 – 20 years! However not all models. The cheapest ones often fail to do so in the day-to-day operation. Due to the financial possibilities from the subsidies and the project responsibility, municipalities have an opportunity to choose a WWPT which will provide a real contribution to environmental protection.
The French government subsidizes the WWTP types that have been proven successful on the French market and it means the subsidies go to WWTPs with a biofilter. At the first sight it is a logical but not neutral approach. In fact, it puts restraints on the development of quality technical WWTP which demonstrate good performance and excellent results of effluent water for example in Germany. In addition, compared to the WWTP with a biofilter they have a number of other advantages. In my opinion what makes a good functioning WWTP is its quality, intelligent design, suitable control units and service, not its type. Each customer / application case requires a tailor-made approach and some technologies are better suited in one case, some in another case.

Select the right battery – Ensure reliable operation of your control unit
The control units made by BONNEL TECHNOLOGIE, which monitor reliable operation of your decentralized sewage treatment plant, are complex electronic devices. In general, control units in continuous and SBR plants are exposed to demanding conditions. Among others the following operational parameters are crucial:
- Maximum temperature of WWTP ambience 50-55°C
- Batteries have to be of the right dimensions, capacity and type.
- Another criterion for their selection is re-charging through permanently low current.

How to choose a control unit for your WWTP
When you go shopping for clothes or shoes, there are some basic information you will need to get the right jacket or a fitting pair of shoes. In order to choose the right control unit for your domestic sewage treatment plant, you will need to answer some basic questions, too.

How to take good care for your control unit

1. Install the device into suitable location.
Your control unit should be
- Outside your WWTP (or)
- In the well-aired space inside the WWTP
- Sufficiently high above the terrain to prevent a snowfall, flooding or dust from coming in
- In dry space – humidity can cause corrosion of electrical parts
- In a closed and well-aired object/box/pillar/wooden box. The blower will need fresh air not the air from WWTP.
- Inside, not in the direct sun. The control unit cannot be exposed to temperatures permanently exceeding 45-50 degrees Celsius. In the southern part of the control cabinet these values can be reached easily.
- Good access for the service staff and the owner
- No access for unauthorized persons and children
2. Check the control unit regularly – visually and by listening to it
Check once a week if your control unit sends any alarm.
Check if the WWTP smells like „rotten eggs“. This odour near the control unit may signal faulty functioning of your WWTP. These gases may cause corrosion of your control unit (electrical components) and the concrete tanks, too.
3. Take preventive care and maintain your WWTP regularly
Follow instructions and recommendations given by the producers regarding preventive maintenance.
Prevention and good care are two important steps to a reliable operation of your control unit and your WWTP.
